Key points
- Brackets are gently loosened and removed with a special instrument.
- The leftover adhesive is polished off the teeth.
- Scans or impressions are taken so your retainers can be made, if they have not been already.
- Retainers are fitted, sometimes at the same visit, and you will be shown how to wear and clean them.
- Teeth can feel a little sensitive for a short time afterwards.
Debond day
The day your braces come off is a big moment. In this video, Dr Sarah Sadek shows what happens at a removal appointment, often called a debond.
The most important part of the visit is starting your retainers. Teeth naturally tend to move back after treatment, so wearing retainers as advised protects your result.
Questions we often hear
Does it hurt to get braces taken off?
Most people feel pressure rather than pain as the brackets are removed. Teeth may feel a little sensitive afterwards.
Will my teeth look different straight after?
Teeth may look slightly dull until the adhesive is fully polished away, and gums may be a little puffy for a few days. This usually settles.
When can I whiten my teeth after braces?
Ask your dentist. Many people wait a few weeks after removal before whitening.
