Keeping your teeth bright while wearing braces

Key points

  • Whitening is usually best done after braces come off, so the whole tooth surface can lighten evenly.
  • During treatment, plaque left around brackets can cause white or brown marks on the enamel. Careful brushing around every bracket helps prevent this.
  • Use a fluoride toothpaste twice a day, plus a fluoride mouthwash if your dentist recommends it.
  • Cutting down on sugary snacks and staining drinks such as coffee, tea and cola helps keep teeth clean and bright.
  • Regular hygiene visits remove stains and build-up you cannot shift at home.

Bright teeth during and after braces

Lots of people want a whiter smile when their braces come off. In this video, Dr Sarah Sadek shares practical tips for keeping teeth clean and bright during treatment, and explains why timing matters for whitening.

The best results come from preventing marks in the first place: good cleaning, less sugar and regular check-ups. Once your braces are off, your dentist can talk you through teeth whitening options.

AddaSmile clear aligners

AddaSmile is a more affordable clear aligner option, planned and overseen by our orthodontic team. Each plan includes an in-person 3D scan, whitening and retainers in one price. Ask about it at your free consultation.

Questions we often hear

Can I whiten my teeth while wearing braces?

It is usually best to wait until your braces are removed. Whitening around brackets can leave uneven patches where the brackets were. Ask your orthodontist about timing.

What are white spots after braces?

White marks are often early enamel damage caused by plaque sitting around the brackets. Thorough brushing and fluoride help prevent them. If you notice them, ask your dentist about the options.

Do whitening toothpastes work?

They can help remove surface stains but do not change the natural colour of your teeth much. In the UK, professional tooth whitening must be prescribed by a dental professional.
