What is an implant-retained denture?

An implant-retained denture (also called an overdenture or snap-on denture) is a full denture that clips onto dental implants placed in your jaw. The implants act like anchors, so the denture stays put when you eat, talk and laugh, but you can still unclip it at night to clean it. For many people it is the most affordable way to stop a loose lower denture from moving.

Is it right for you?

Loose lower dentures

Lower dentures often float because there is little to hold them. Two or more implants can make a dramatic difference to how secure they feel.

Sore spots and adhesive

If you rely on fixative or get sore patches, clipping onto implants reduces movement and rubbing.

Eating and confidence

A secure denture lets many people enjoy a wider range of foods and speak without worrying about slipping.

Bone loss

Missing teeth can lead to bone shrinking over time. Implants place load back into the jaw. Your CBCT scan shows how much bone you have.

How treatment works

  1. Consultation (£75)
We talk about what bothers you about your denture, examine your mouth and explain your options and costs. The fee is taken off your treatment if you go ahead.
  2. CBCT scan and plan
A 3D scan in our own practice shows your bone, so the implants can be positioned precisely.
  3. Implant placement
The implants are placed under local anaesthetic. You usually keep wearing a denture while they heal.
  4. Healing and fitting
Once the implants have bonded with the bone, usually after a few months, the clips are fitted and your denture is secured.

Common questions

How many implants do I need for a denture?

For a lower denture, two implants can make a big difference, and four give extra stability. Upper dentures usually need four or more because the bone is softer. Your scan and examination decide what is right for you.

Can I use my existing denture?

Sometimes. If your current denture fits well and is in good condition, it may be possible to add clips to it. Otherwise a new denture is made to fit the implants.

Does it hurt?

Implants are placed under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some tenderness and swelling afterwards is normal and is usually managed with everyday painkillers. We do not offer sedation.

How long does it take?

From consultation to fitted denture usually takes a few months, mainly because the implants need time to bond with the bone. You normally wear a denture throughout.

Am I too old for implants?

Age on its own is rarely the issue. What matters is your general health, your bone and how well you can keep the area clean. We will talk this through with you at your consultation.

How do I look after it?

Unclip the denture to clean it daily, brush around the implant attachments and keep up regular check-ups and hygiene visits. The clips wear over time and are replaced as part of routine maintenance.
