How to put in and take out your retainers

Key points

  • Line the retainer up with your teeth and press it into place with your fingertips.
  • Do not bite your retainer into place, as this can crack or bend it.
  • To remove it, ease it off gently from the back teeth on both sides rather than pulling from the front.
  • Clean it every day and keep it in its case when it is not in your mouth.
  • Keep it away from heat, such as hot water or a sunny car dashboard, which can warp it.

Retainer habits that protect your smile

Retainers last longer and work better when they are handled carefully. In this video, Dr Sarah Sadek shows the right way to put retainers in and take them out, with tips to avoid damage.

If a retainer starts to feel tight, it can be a sign your teeth have begun to move. Wear it as advised and contact the practice if it does not fit properly.

AddaSmile clear aligners

AddaSmile is a more affordable clear aligner option, planned and overseen by our orthodontic team. Each plan includes an in-person 3D scan, whitening and retainers in one price. Ask about it at your free consultation.
