Key points
- Spacing affected both the top and bottom teeth in this case.
- Clear aligners brought the teeth together over the course of treatment.
- Closing spaces can help stop food getting trapped between teeth.
- Spaces have a habit of reopening, so long-term retainer wear is essential.

Questions we often hear
What causes spaces between teeth?
Common causes include small teeth for the size of the jaw, missing teeth, gum disease and tongue habits. The cause affects how we treat it.
Do I need a fixed retainer after closing gaps?
Often, yes. A thin wire bonded behind the teeth, with a removable retainer for nights, gives the best protection.
Can students have aligners at Waterloo?
Yes. Many of our aligner patients are students and young professionals, and spreading the cost is possible.
