60-second answer · Retainers

The retainer mistake that can undo your treatment

Key points

  • Retainers are what keep teeth straight after braces or aligners finish.
  • Losing, damaging or not wearing a retainer can let teeth drift back, which may mean further treatment.
  • Always keep removable retainers in their case when they are out of your mouth, never wrapped in a tissue.
  • Keep them away from heat and pets, and clean them gently with cool water.
  • If a retainer is lost, broken or no longer fits, contact us promptly before teeth start to move.

Protecting your result

Straight teeth are an investment, and retainers protect it. This very short clip is a reminder of a mistake we see often, and how easy it is to avoid.

If you need a replacement retainer or are unsure how to wear yours, our team at Waterloo can help.

Questions we often hear

What should I do if I lose my retainer?

Contact us as soon as possible so we can arrange a replacement before your teeth move.

How long do I need to wear my retainer?

Long-term wear is usually recommended. Your orthodontist will tell you how often for your treatment.

Can I clean my retainer with hot water?

No. Hot water can warp clear retainers. Use cool water and a soft brush.
