Key points
- Colour comes from the small elastic ties around each bracket, which are usually changed at every adjustment.
- Pairing two complementary colours often looks better than using lots of different shades.
- Deeper shades such as navy or purple tend to make teeth look whiter.
- Very pale or clear ties can show staining from coffee, tea and curry.
- Many students and teens match colours to a season, an event or a favourite team.
Finding a look you like
This quick clip shows some of Dr Sarah's favourite brace colour combinations, so you can arrive at your next appointment with an idea in mind.
Because the ties change every few weeks, there is plenty of chance to try something new. Our full video on choosing brace colours has more tips.
Questions we often hear
Can I change colours at every visit?
Usually yes. The ties are replaced at most adjustments, so you can pick a new combination each time.
Which colours make teeth look whiter?
Darker shades such as navy, purple and dark green tend to make teeth look whiter than pale or clear ties.
Do I have to have coloured ties?
No. Clear or tooth-coloured ties are also available.
