Key points
- Most braces problems, such as a loose bracket, a poking wire or a lost tie, are not emergencies, but call the practice so we can advise you.
- Orthodontic wax is the most useful thing to keep at home. It covers anything that rubs.
- Do not cut wires or try to glue anything back on yourself.
- For soreness, soft foods, warm salt-water rinses and the pain relief you would normally take, if suitable for you, can help.
- If you have had an injury to your face or mouth, have swelling, or are in severe pain, seek urgent care.
Staying comfortable between visits
Braces sometimes break or rub between appointments. In this video, Dr Sarah Sadek runs through the most common problems and simple, safe fixes you can use at home until you can be seen.
Keep a small kit with orthodontic wax, a few interdental brushes and spare elastics if you wear them. Let us know about any breakage, even if it is not bothering you, because it can affect how teeth move.
Questions we often hear
What counts as a braces emergency?
A true emergency is an injury to the face or mouth, swelling, infection or severe pain. Most other problems, like a loose bracket or poking wire, can wait for a repair appointment, but call us for advice.
What should I keep at home for braces problems?
Orthodontic wax, interdental brushes, a small mirror and spare elastics if you use them.
Should I still go to my adjustment if something is broken?
Yes, but let the practice know in advance so enough time is booked to fix it.
