The journey in brief

  • Consultation and written quote
  • 3D scan and digital plan
  • Implant placed under local anaesthetic
  • Healing, usually a few months
  • Crown, bridge or denture fitted
  • Regular reviews and hygiene visits

How long does the whole process take?

For most people, getting a dental implant takes a few months from the first appointment to the final tooth. Much of that time is simply healing, when the implant quietly bonds with your jawbone while you get on with life. The number of actual appointments is fairly small, and many can be booked early in the morning or around your lunch break, which helps if you commute through Waterloo.

The six stages of implant treatment. The healing stage between placement and your final tooth is usually a few months, and a temporary tooth can be provided if needed. Illustration only.

What happens at each appointment

  1. Consultation (£75)
You tell us about the missing tooth or teeth and what you want from treatment. Dr Anti examines your mouth, checks your gums and the teeth around the gap, and talks you through implants alongside bridges and dentures. You leave with a clear idea of your options and costs. The £75 fee is taken off your treatment if you go ahead.
  2. 3D scan and plan
A CBCT scan, taken in our own practice, shows the height, width and quality of your bone in three dimensions. It lets the implant position be planned digitally before anything is done, and it shows early whether extra bone might be needed. The scan is from £90, and you then receive a written, itemised quote.
  3. Implant placement
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic and the implant, a small threaded titanium post, is placed in the bone where the root used to be. You are awake throughout and we explain each step as we go. We do not offer sedation. Most appointments of this kind fit within a morning or afternoon.
  4. Healing
Over the next few months the bone grows around the implant and holds it firmly. You will have a short check-up to see how the gum is settling. If the gap is visible when you smile, a temporary tooth can usually be provided so you are not left with a space at work.
  5. Your new tooth
Once the implant is stable, we take an impression or digital scan and a crown, bridge or denture is made to match your natural teeth. At the fitting appointment it is attached, your bite is checked and adjusted, and you are shown how to clean around it.
  6. Reviews and hygiene
Implants need the same care as natural teeth. Regular check-ups and hygiene visits let us keep an eye on the gum and bone around the implant so problems can be picked up early.

Planning around your working day

Time off work

Most people go back to work the next day after implant placement. If your job is very physical, or you are having several implants at once, you may prefer to book a day or two off.

Early or late slots

Shorter visits, such as reviews and fittings, can often be booked around commuting times. Ask the team which slots suit you.

Travel home

Because treatment is done with local anaesthetic only, you can usually travel home on your own by train, bus or on foot.

Meetings and calls

Your lip may feel numb for a few hours after placement, so it is sensible not to schedule important calls straight afterwards.

Recovery tips after implant placement

Some tenderness, swelling or light bruising for a few days is normal and usually settles steadily. These simple steps help the area heal well:

WhenWhat helps
First dayRest where you can, avoid hot drinks until the numbness wears off, and do not rinse vigorously. A cold pack on the cheek can ease swelling.
First few daysEat soft foods on the other side of your mouth, take everyday painkillers if needed (following the packet instructions), and avoid strenuous exercise.
CleaningKeep brushing your other teeth as normal and clean around the implant gently as advised. Warm salt-water rinses are often recommended from the day after.
Smoking and alcoholBoth can slow healing, so it helps to avoid them while the area settles.

What can change the timeline?

A tooth still to come out

If a failing tooth needs removing first, the socket usually needs time to heal before the implant goes in. Sometimes the two can be done together; your scan helps decide.

Bone levels

If extra bone is needed, we explain the options, which may include grafting, and include it in your written quote. This can add time.

Your general health

Smoking, diabetes and gum disease can affect healing and suitability. Each is assessed individually at your consultation.

Several teeth

Larger cases such as implant bridges or All-on-4 follow the same stages but are planned as a whole.

Questions about the implant journey

How many appointments will I need?

For a single implant, typically a consultation, a scan, the placement, a healing check, an impression and a fitting, plus your routine reviews afterwards. Your plan lists them in advance so you can arrange time off.

Will I have a gap while the implant heals?

Not if you would rather not. For teeth that show when you smile, a temporary tooth can usually be made. For back teeth, many people are happy to wait.

Can I go straight back to the office after placement?

Some people do, but most prefer to go home and rest for the remainder of the day. Most return to work the next morning.

Is the scan done somewhere else?

No. We have our own CBCT scanner at 223 Waterloo Road, so there is no separate trip to another clinic.

Can I spread the cost across the treatment?

Yes. 0% finance through Tabeo is available on many treatments, subject to status, and members of our practice plans receive a discount on treatment. See our implant costs guide for prices.
